La India Bella de Puerto Rico

She clothed herself in righteousness
She bathed herself in Love
She crowned her head with honor
Her Strength came from Above
She walked and talked with Angels
Her children called her Blessed
La India Bella de Puerto Rico
Has now gone home to rest

  1. My grandmother, Carmen Rita Torres was born in Catano, Puerto Rico on August 8, 1926. She was the fifth born of twelve children to Miguel and Maria Torres. Carmen grew to be a loving and caring young lady. At the age of 18 she married her knight in shining armour Military Police Seargant Harry Oscar Martinez. Together they gave life to twelve children of thier own. Carmen never had to work a day of her life as my grandfather would work, shop and even buy her personal necessities. All she would have to do in return is love him and care for thier children which she did until the day he died in 1985. Her whole world came crashing down around her. Yet, she managed to survive not only the death of her husband, but three of her children as well. In 2008 Carmen was diagnosed with Breast cancer and was given 3-6 months to live. However, she fought for a year and 3 months. Carmen lost her battle with cancer on February 6, 2010. I can not help but continuously feel proud to come from such a strong woman who gave life to so many. From her twelve children came 27 grandchildren and 28 great-grand children. So many lives are owed to this strong, woman who taught us all how to love and believe in God. She gave us a faith that is stronger now than ever, because we know that she was put on this earth for a purpose and that she is now finally at rest with her creator. Grandma I will love you and miss you always. Enjoy eternity in peace
